About Robert Beck
Robert Beck has become one of the most respected sports photographers in the industry today. Working for Sports Illustrated for over three decades, he has shot many of the world’s greatest athletes and captured top sporting events, including the Masters, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup Finals and the Olympics. He is currently based in Carlsbad, California.
In October of 1986 Robert Beck went to Hawaii to shoot the Ironman Triathlon for a small sports stock agency with nothing but his camera gear and an airline ticket. He slept on a friend’s floor the first night after hitchhiking into town from the airport. There were no hotel rooms available. No rental cars. After checking in with the media center the day before the event and found out Sports Illustrated had “hired” him to shoot the race. Robert came out of the assignment with a double truck table of contents picture for Sports Illustrated. The image became one of Life Magazine’s Pictures of the Decade. That was Robert Beck’s first assignment for SI.
Over thirty years later Robert Beck is still shooting sports, twenty of them as a staffer for Sports Illustrated where over 175 of his images have graced SI branded covers. During that time Beck has covered Gretzky and Bonds as they set lofty individual records. Beck has shot the Red Sox breaking curses, Kings winning crowns and a Tiger being chased by everyone. Robert has had sittings with Peyton, Kobe, Shaq, The Flying Tomato, Tony Hawk, Magic, Floyd, Misty, Usain, Kersh, Neymar, Pele, Kelly, Steph, Montana and Michael (the swimming one) to name a few. World Series…check. NBA and Stanley Cup Finals…check. Super Bowls and BCS Championships…check. Final Four…check. Golf majors? Check to over 75 of them. Robert has also ventured to Beijing, Atlanta, London, Rio, Vancouver and Sochi to capture the emotion, color, pageantry and action that are the Olympic Games.
